Chris calls me a maximizer when I shop.
He’s not wrong.
I like to survey my options and consider the design details that I want before I commit to anything. There’s usually a deep dive involved, and purchases sometimes take longer, but I’ve been burned one to many times by eye candy and things that are “good enough”. I play for keeps.
I thought it would be fun to switch things up a bit and peel back the curtain on my shopping process - both what I’m shopping for and what I consider when looking at my options.
First up, a long-ish leather coat. They’re like the edgier, older cousin of the trench coat with the same, if not more, styling potential. I’m looking for something that hits somewhere between the knee and a few inches above the ankle, and feels refined and relaxed. Nothing too oversized. I’m open to single- or double-breasted, but am leaning more towards single.
After weeks of deliberation, I feel like I’ve honed in on few styles that fit the bill. Let’s discuss.
I’ve always been curious about Reformation’s leather outwear, but have yet to give it a try. I wasn’t originally leaning towards double-breasted, but I like the cut and length of this one. I appreciate the LWG certification and that the leather is chrome-free , but can’t tell if it’s lined or not. Based on the description I’m assuming not. This long-line blazer is also a nice option, but on the shorter side.
Nour Hammour was the first stop on my search. They have the best selection of leather and shearling at a more reasonable price point (relatively speaking) without skimping on quality. Their leather is sourced from a by-product of the food industry and everything is made-to-order (minimizes waste and excess inventory) in their Paris or Istanbul ateliers. Their team is also just so lovely. I always make a point to schedule a visit to their showroom when I’m in Paris. I promise this isn’t sponsored haha, I’m just a genuine fan.
There are three options that check all the boxes, but the Astrid (more sizes here) stands out most. A slightly longer version of the second Reformation option mentioned above, but with a cupro-based lining. My only concern would be length. The Tamara and Gotham are close seconds, followed by the Misha.
Technically I already ordered this, but am still tbd. I’m a little undecided on the higher neckline, and where the coat will hit on my calf, but I’m optimistic. The shoulders are also a smidge more rounded, due to the dropped shoulder seam. I love how it looked on Claire Rose, but she’s also got a good 4” on me.
I’ve come across several leather jackets that introduced me to Worn Vintage, but it wasn’t until recently that I discovered they have a small collection of outerwear that they design and make using vintage leather (and that they are on Moda Operandi!). This one is similar in vibe to the Astrid, but a bit more affordable. I’m mostly trying to decide if I want shoulder pads in my leather coat, and if I like the pocket placement. I also love this, but need to see it in person.
Speaking of vintage, I just came across this vintage one on Etsy under $100. A bit more oversized than what I’m looking for, but it looks so good. The shoulder width is similar to this coat.
Definitely not a black leather coat, but too gorgeous not to mention! I’ve tried this on twice and both times gone weak in the knees. You bet your bottom dollar I’m keeping an eagle eye out for any deals.
Will report back! xx, Sarah
